Foundations Furniture Launches Appeal to Improve Living Conditions for Families in Tyne and Wear

Thanks to funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery, Gateshead-based organisation, Foundations Furniture has launched a campaign within the local community to boost donations of household items that will help alleviate furniture poverty for local people experiencing financial hardship.

The charity collects items of furniture, small electricals and kitchen appliances from across Tyne and Wear every weekday, free of charge. Each item is brought back the charity on Askew Road West in Gateshead where Tyne and Wear residents in hardship can access the items at an affordable price.

Foundations is one of many organisations currently supported by Postcode Neighbourhood Trust. Thanks to funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, Foundations has received £15,000 this year, and will receive another £15,000 next year to continue it’s vital support for people struggling to afford essential items for their home.

Every sofa, dining table, wardrobe or bed donated locally can make a life-changing difference. Research from End Furniture Poverty shows around six million people across the UK are living in furniture poverty and without essential items that many of us take for granted. For those trying to recover from homelessness, escaping domestic abuse or struggling with the rising cost of living, one of most important foundations they need to rebuild, is a safe, stable home. Financial hardship can make this feel impossible but in Tyne and Wear, the Foundations charity is helping hundreds of households each year to quickly access the furniture they need.

“We’re so pleased to have been awarded funding from the Postcode Neighbourhood Trust to continue our work for the next two years. We really want the local community to consider donating their unwanted items. Maybe you are replacing a sofa soon, or have an extra bed and mattress they no longer use. If it’s still in good condition, a local household struggling with the cost of living, or who have experienced crisis, can greatly benefit. We see first hand the positive difference each donation makes, and we hope by raising awareness of our free collection service, we can continue to provide essential items to people in greatest need.”
