Foundation4work is a free programme offered by our charity here in Gateshead, offering up to 12 weeks of one-to-one assistance for individuals in need of support with job hunting, CV preparation, interview preparation, and any other aspect of the job search process they may find challenging. It also gives people hands on experience in a retail and warehouse setting, to gain the skills and confidence that employers are looking for. Furthermore, participances access free work boots, PPE and we can cover your travel costs to and from our charity.

We share how the programme helped Ben (not his real name) to regain the confidence he needed to move back into a job he loves after leaving his previous career.

Background

Ben found out about the Foundation4Work programme through word of mouth. At the time, Ben had experienced a period of health issues since leaving his previous career. Ben wanted to be more active and establish a new routine. He had a specific interest in van driving, having done it in a previous role, and was eager to get back into a work environment that suited his skills and experience.

He attended an initial meeting where the Foundation4Work team explained how the charity operates and outlined the benefits of the programme.

Programme Participation

During his induction into the Foundation4Work programme, Ben got to know the team and the charity, and took part in a variety of training sessions. He completed courses in manual handling, health and safety, fire procedures, and equality and diversity.

He attended the programme twice a week (the minimum requirement for the free course is just one day per week) which gave him the consistent routine he was looking for. Being back in a workplace environment helped Ben rediscover his confidence very quickly.

Outcomes and Impact for Ben

Ben reported that he enjoyed the programme and particularly appreciated the group atmosphere at Foundations. He felt comfortable in the supportive and collaborative environment that the charity offered, which motivated him to engage more fully with the programme.

Upon completing the programme, Ben saw an opportunity to apply for a part-time driver’s role, a job that aligned perfectly with his previous experience and interests. He successfully secured the part-time position.

Looking Forward

Ben is happy in his new role and anticipates continuing in the position until he eventually retires. His journey with Foundation4Work not only helped him regain a sense of structure and purpose, but also resulted in him securing a fulfilling job he enjoys.
